Moai's Molnhem Campaign - Session 4: Bank Heist

The party finally attempted the bank heist this week, made up primarily of the "B Team" characters while the main group are all training to attain second level.

There was a buzz around town that a notorious local necromancer, Autismo, managed to break into the bank vault and made off with half the platinum stored therein. They'd been scooped by someone else!

Not to be deterred, the party proceeded to the hidden bank vault behind the waterfall of their city of Barham, based on the hot tip from Faith, who'd been present a few weeks back when the primary party was cavorting with the bandits in the mine.

They approached the clerk at the front desk, and when he asked for credentials Faith passed them off as security consultants hired by the Bankers to assess the faults with the vault's defenses. The gnomish clerk was somewhat wary about this story, but when faith dropped the name of a notorious banker (Epsteinimus) who'd allegedly hired them, the clerk decided to let them through to assess the situation.

They quickly came face to face with a pair of gargoyles guarding the vault door at the far end of a round chamber. Horton boldly approached, thinking they were nothing but ornaments, and was soon accosted by the creatures. They slashed him to ribbons, and he lay bleeding out on the floor as the gargoyles advanced.

Doloon and Faith stretched a rope between the two, with the aim being to try and ensnare the advancing gargoyles. Several of the other players unleashed javelins and sling bullets. Most were direct hits, but didn't visibly damage or deter the creatures. The bulk of the party fled to the outer chamber to question the clerk, who immediately called their bluff about being hired, claiming if Epsteinumus had hired them, they should know how to disable the gargoyles. After some heated exchanges, Molly the assassin grabbed the gnome and held her blade to his throat, demanding cooperation and for him to disable his guard gargoyles. The gnome called her bluff, and Molly proceeded to lop the beakish nose from his face. The gnome doubled down, urging his gargoyles to kill them all. In the ensuing rounds, the gnome managed to loose a dagger from his belt and stabbed Molly in the thigh fatally. As she collapsed behind him, Helblindi tossed a dart at the gnome's head, and Throrfuck lopped it off, leaving them to contend with the seemingly invincible gargoyles.

The creatures continued to shrug off damage, but Doloon managed with some fancy ropework to incapacitate one of the creatures with the rope. With everything going belly up, and with two of their allies bleeding out, the group decided to flee. Doloon dragged his gargoyle behind him as they retreated from the chamber, and on their way out he shoved the beast over the cliff and down the waterfall, where it raised hell by screaming bloody murder all the way down.

With the town on high alert, and several of their companions lost, the pack of vagabonds scattered out into the wilderness to avoid the repercussions of their failed bank heist. They remembered hearing rumors of a trade war to the south, clogging up the river trade routes, and decided to enlist as mercenaries. They encountered no trouble heading south down the river, and enlisted with the first band they came across: The green-on-red plaid log-driver mercenary camp. Time will tell how their mercenary work goes, or if there will be lasting consequences of pissing off a cabal of ruthless bankers.
